Colombia Leads Medal Table at 2026 South American Games

Bogotá: The 2026 South American Games, held in Bogotá from March 15 to 28, concluded with Colombia topping the overall medal table for the first time in the tournament's history. The Colombian delegation earned 89 gold medals, 76 silver, and 68 bronze, standing out especially in athletics, cycling, and aquatic sports.

In athletics, Colombia shone with memorable performances. Doris Patiño won gold in the 1,500 meters with a time that broke the existing South American record. Óscar Calvo triumphed in the 400 meters hurdles, while the men's 4x400 relay completed the golden hat-trick for the Colombian team. Cycling was also a source of glory: Colombia, a global power in this sport, swept the road and time-trial events.

Significance of the Tournament

The South American Games are the most important multi-sport event on the continent after the Pan American Games and serve as an Olympic preparation platform. For Colombia, the results in Bogotá represent a notable advance in its sports development, thanks to sustained investment in infrastructure and the scholarship program for high-performance athletes implemented in recent years.

Athletes from Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela also had outstanding participations. The Venezuelan delegation, which competed with a special spirit given the country's political context, won several medals in baseball, softball, and combat sports, and was received with particular affection by the Colombian public.

Road to Los Angeles 2028

For several of the medalists, the South American Games represented a first test ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Colombian Olympic committee announced it will identify the top 50 athletes from the tournament to include them in an intensive Olympic preparation program, with access to world-class coaches and resources to participate in high-level international competitions.
