Latin American Sovereign Quantum and AI Institute Deploys First Regional High-Performance Computing Fabric Across Brazil, Mexico, and Chile
SÃO PAULO — Technology ministers, computer science academics, and regional startup accelerators across Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia gathered at the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) on Sunday to inaugurate the "Inter-American Sovereign Computing Fabric," Latin America's first interconnected high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum simulation grid.
Linking advanced supercomputers at the Santos Dumont cluster in Petrópolis, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the National Center for High Performance Computing in Santiago via high-speed optical dark fiber, the federated network delivers over 45 petaflops of sovereign compute capacity dedicated strictly to public-interest science, climate modeling, and regional biomedical discovery.
By creating a shared sovereign compute ecosystem, the initiative breaks Latin America’s historic dependence on foreign commercial cloud providers, ensuring that sensitive epidemiological data, indigenous biodiversity gene sequences, and national meteorological calculations remain hosted within local jurisdictions governed by regional data privacy frameworks.
During live demonstrations, regional researchers demonstrated the platform’s real-world power by executing a complex molecular dynamics simulation of novel dengue antiviral compounds in under forty minutes—a task that previously required weeks of costly compute time on North American corporate servers.
The network also includes open-access developer sandboxes that provide thousands of Latin American software engineers, AI developers, and university graduate students with free access to advanced GPU clusters and quantum emulation SDKs, fostering a homegrown generation of deep-tech entrepreneurs.
Technology policy analysts hailed the launch as a landmark milestone in Latin American technological sovereignty, proving that strategic academic collaboration can establish world-class digital infrastructure tailored to the continent’s most pressing developmental challenges.
