Latin American and Southeast Asian Trade Envoys Secure Milestone Bilateral Commercial Deals at Santiago Economic Mission
SANTIAGO: Commercial ties between Latin America and Southeast Asia reached an important milestone as high-level business delegations and trade diplomats concluded the "Trans-Pacific Economic Mission 2026" in Santiago, finalizing bilateral commercial transactions and investment pacts exceeding $344 million.
The multi-sector trade mission—led by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade in collaboration with Chilean export promotion agency ProChile and Pacific Alliance trade chambers—focused on accelerating direct trade in clean energy infrastructure, advanced agritech processing, organic specialty crops, and industrial electric mobility components.
The agreements reflect a deliberate regional strategy across South America and ASEAN to diversify international export destinations, establish resilient Pacific maritime corridors, and reduce dependency on traditional Western and East Asian supply routes.
Expanding Cross-Pacific Value Chains and Green Technology
Among the headline agreements signed during the Santiago forum was a joint venture between Southeast Asian nickel and battery cell manufacturers and South American copper-lithium processing consortiums.
The initiative establishes direct shipping linkages between the Port of Valparaíso and the Port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, streamlining customs pre-clearance for critical green technology components.
"Latin America and Southeast Asia represent the most dynamic emerging economic regions in the Global South," declared Indonesian Vice Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga during the concluding trade protocol ceremony. "By linking our manufacturing supply chains directly across the Pacific, we are building mutual economic sovereignty and technological resilience."
Key Commercial Sectors Boosted by the Santiago Mission
Trade analysts point to four primary growth sectors benefiting from the bilateral accords:
- Electric Mobility & Battery Components: Joint supply contracts for copper cathode wire and nickel-cobalt battery chemistries.
- Agri-Food & Halal Certified Exports: Streamlining direct Latin American exports of specialty grains, fruits, and bovine products into Southeast Asian consumer markets.
- Digital Trade & Cross-Border Logistics: Harmonizing electronic customs documentation and phytosanitary certificates to cut shipping transit times by 30 percent.
- Sustainable Forestry & Biomass Tech: Co-financing sustainable timber certification and bio-packaging manufacturing facilities.
Future Trade Forums Scheduled for Jakarta
Both delegations agreed to establish a permanent Trans-Pacific Commercial Council, with a follow-up business summit scheduled to take place in Jakarta in early 2027.
