TEMASCALCINGO: A religious festival in central Mexico turned into a deadly disaster when pyrotechnic material exploded, killing at least 10 people and injuring 64 others. The explosion took place Saturday night near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, in Mexico state, where hundreds of people had gathered for festivities linked to the local patron saint celebration.

The explosion brought down part of a wall or nearby building, leaving the area covered in debris and causing panic among those at the event. As the extent of the tragedy became clear, residents and emergency workers sifted through smoke and rubble for survivors.

Temascalcingo is located about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City and has a population of some 66,000. The event occurred in the community of Santa María Canchesdá, in the municipality.

Fireworks and other religious celebrations are usually part of the festival which has been overshadowed by the tragedy. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the blast.

Stored Fireworks Material Tied to Blast
